Cathrin's world

Drop me a line!

Norway is a country of endless rivers and powerful waterfalls which have contributed to making the country known abroad. No matter where you are, there is probably a waterfall or some rapids right nearby. Anything from a long dramatic one to a small rolling one.

People are attracted by running water. Many of our water- courses are tamed, but the sight of a waterfall as it plunges down a mountainside, can still be found several places.

Western Norway is especially known for their magnificent waterfalls, but inland river valleys will impress you with some very fine ones too. Water that gurgles, rushes or roars everywhere, and every waterfall and river is unique.

Vettisfossen

Vettisfossen is one of the highest waterfalls in Europe, and it is Norway's highest waterfall with a free fall of 275 m (902 feet). It is found in the lover part of Jotunheimen.

Friaren

According to the legend, Friaren (The Suitor) Waterfall wooed De Syv Søstre (The Seven Sisters) Waterfalls on the other side of the fjord.
The Seven Sisters have a free fall of 250 m (820 feet).

The farm Skageflå

Skageflå is on the south side of Geirangerfjorden, 400 m (1312 feet) above the fjord, next to Friaren (The Suitor) Waterfall. The path leading up to the farm is very steep, and you have to climb most of the way.

The farm used to have 118 goats, 80 sheep, cows, a bull and a horse. It was one of the bigger farms in Geirangerfjorden, but was left in 1916.

In the section covering the fjords, I mentioned a farmer who didn't care much about paying taxes, and that was the owner of Skageflå. In 1855 a cliff on the path up to the farm was blown away, but before that you had to use a ladder to get all the way up. Whenever the tax collector came, the farmer refused to send down the ladder. After several tries, the tax collector just gave up, and left the farmer alone.

Skageflå has a breathtaking view, facing The Seven Sisters Waterfalls, and Knivsflå, another of the mountain farms of Geirangerfjorden.
